The Power of Words

led by

Robby Beck (and cohorts)

“A powerful agent is the right word. Whenever we come upon one of those intensely right words in a book or a newspaper the resulting effect is physical as well as spiritual, and electrically prompt.”

Mark Twain

OVERVIEW:

“I gotta use words when I talk to you.”  T.S. Eliot

Words shape us, empower us, hurt us.   There are words we have used in the past and will use again; words we should use more often and words we should never use, but do.  During this weekend retreat, sponsored by New Mexico Men’s Wellness (NMMW), we will explore and experience the power of words and the affects and effects of our words, in our lives, in the lives of our loved ones and in the lives of others with whom we have contact.

We will work together in small groups of four to six men to deeply explore our connections to words and each other.  We will come together in a large group setting (20 to 30 men) where there will be time for talking circles and sharing of insights, experiences and wisdom.  Ceremony will be a significant part of the weekend.

Drumming sure feels good

In between the structured periods of discussion, music, eating and sharing, men will enjoy free time, relaxation and outdoor recreation.  Intimacy, humor and camaraderie are typical benefits of NMMW retreats.  The accommodations at Hummingbird are simple but comfortable, and meals are provided.

THE MEN:  For the past 28 years, New Mexico Men’s Wellness has provided forums for men to learn, grow and freely express their creativity, intentions, and wisdom.  We embrace diversity and encourage all men with an interest in our community to attend this Retreat.  To learn more about NMMW explore this website (www.nmmw.org) and if you are on Facebook find us by searching for “New Mexico Men’s Wellness.”

FACILITATOR:

“When a man uses the words ‘just a country lawyer’ to describe himself, check to see if your wallet’s still there.
Fred Harris (attributed to Lyndon Johnson)

Robby Beck is a country lawyer who has been involved in NMMW since 1997.  The leadership roles at spring retreats are shared among the participants: men with diverse knowledge, experience and skills, and with a common belief in our capacities for personal growth, nurturing, creativity and leadership.

SETTING: Hummingbird Music Camp is located in Jemez Springs, New Mexico. We will have the north campus to ourselves: a large meeting/gathering room, covered outdoor space, and dorm style double rooms.  The main campus, including the dining room where we share our meals with the other guests, is a ten minute walk from our headquarters.  The lively Jemez River runs through the camp, and the nearby forested mountains and dramatic red rock cliffs provide ready opportunities for hiking, bird watching and exploration.  Relaxing hot springs are a short drive from the camp.

REGISTRATION:  The registration form (with much of the information on this web page) is available by clicking on 2013 Spring Retreat Reg Form.  The registration page contains details about fees.  The registration form is an Acrobat PDF form, and a link will be found at the end of this page to download and install the latest (free) version of Acrobat Reader.  Registration is on a first come, first served basis, so send it in as soon as possible and no later than April 1st.  We expect 20 to 30 men to attend, and we will create a waiting list if needed.

SCHOLARSHIPS:  NMMW has funds to provide partial or full sponsorship for those men who are eager to attend and in need of financial assistance.  Please contact Robby Beck directly for further information.

“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in baskets of silver.”  Proverbs 25:11
