Registration is now open for the

New Mexico Men’s Wellness 2013 Summer Gathering

at the YWCA Pinon Canyon Center in Tijeras, NM

Friday through Sunday, August 16-18

Our theme is

“Transcending our Socialization as Males”
(a.k.a. Kicking Machismo’s Butt)

An Important timely note: As of this writing (July 16), the Forest Service has announced that Jack’s Creek Campground (and almost all of the Pecos campgrounds and the Pecos Wilderness) will remain closed until the end of September.  Rather than attempt to secure another forest site at this late date (with all the additional logistics involved) we have opted to have the Summer Gathering at the YWCA Pinon Canyon Center located in Tijeras off Highway 337 (the old “South 14) just east of the Tijeras Ranger Station.  While not a wilderness location like Jack’s Creek, the center includes a rustic lodge that can host all of us for large group gatherings, has bathrooms, good kitchen facilities, some indoor sleeping quarters for those who opt not to set up their tents on the ground and room to set up the sweat lodge and fire rules that will allow us to do it.  Further down on this page you will find some photos taken by Joseph Woods during our investigation and evaluation of the site.  The Pinon Canon center is located on 65 acres with plenty of privacy in spite of being less than 25 miles from ABQ and less than 75 miles from Santa Fe.

We got an excellent deal from the YWCA director Amy Whitfield that will enable us to have the gathering at the original cost but we need enough guys (at least 20 and hopefully 30) to sign up.  To participate in the Summer Gathering, please submit your registration now.  We look forward to seeing you.

Many of us have spent many years dealing with what we have received from our parents, teachers (both religious and secular), peers and the social environment that consciously or unconsciously contribute to how we behave as men in our world.  Over this weekend away from as many of these influences as possible, we plan to share some of our experiences of this process and what we have done with it.  Rich Weiner and Jim Connolly (with able assists from other stalwart men) will be leading this summer gathering and are planning some activities (in small groups and as a whole) that we hope will stir up some connections to the roots of our socialization as males and let us share where we are going with that today.

Registration fee of $45 includes Pinon Canyon center weekend rental, firewood, delicious catered dinner entrée on Saturday evening and sweat lodge (with a discount for early registration).  The center includes a large lodge room with plenty of space for large talking circles, and numerous intimate areas for small groups.  Partial scholarship assistance may be available for men who need it. We also encourage those who can to make a voluntary scholarship donation for future NMMW events.

The YWCA Pinon Canon Center is located in Tijeras about 1/2 mile south of the intersection of NM 333 (old US 66) and the start of NM 337 (old South 14) and behind the USFS Ranger Station and adjacent  to the Tijeras Pueblo archaeological site.  Elevation here is about 6,400 ft., and it can get pretty warm (sometimes hot) during the day with typical highs in the mid 80s.  Monsoon rains are likely if they are around and it can cool off quite a bit at night (into the low 50s) so come prepared.

There is quite a bit of flat parking for car campers, a 20 bunk rustic bunkhouse (with about 10 mattresses), and lots of spots to set up tents.  There is also an open lodge room and another room in which sleeping bags could be laid out on the floor.  Attendees will need to bring appropriate camping gear, food, and clothing for a couple of nights.  There is a kitchen with commercial refrigerator and stove that can be used, or attendees could use their own cooking gear.  Upon receipt of your registration we will send (via Email) an Acrobat PDF that includes all the logistical information that you should need about the weekend (including how to get there, what to bring, etc.).

Planned Events for the weekend

  • Friday Evening opening exercise, formation of small groups and talking circle
  • Saturday and Sunday morning mediation and Qi Gong led by Doug Booth
  • A Saturday morning “psychodrama” exercise in small groups followed by a creative project connected to the theme to be led by Joseph Woods
  • Saturday afternoon large circle followed by optional activities events that will include options for hiking in the Cibola National Forest,  breakout groups, music making, naps, etc.
  • Saturday evening’s shared dinner will be presented by Scott Sharot (with side-dish and desert contributions from others)
  • Robby Beck (Robby’s schedule permitting) will lead the sweat lodge ceremony after dark on Saturday.

The gathering will officially commence on Friday evening, August 16th at 7:00pm but we expect to be on-site by noon on Friday for those who want to arrive early.  Everyone should plan to arrive before 6pm to set up their camp site, eat and be prepared to gather on time.

As always, participation in scheduled events is encouraged but voluntary; men are welcome to participate at whatever level of they choose.  The goal is to provide a safe space to explore the theme, and our connections to each other and to our world.

A registration form (just the form, folks), may be downloaded by clicking here.  The form is an Acrobat PDF that you should save to your computer.  The form can be filled out with Acrobat Reader (no fancy stuff required) then printed (or saved if you wish) to be sent in with a check for your registration.  (If you need a current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, please click on the icon below to download it from Adobe.)
